Product & Sizing Questions
Are compression stockings sold in pairs or individually?
Most knee-highs, thigh-highs, and pantyhose are sold in pairs, but many are also offered as singles. The product description on each page should indicate “pair” or “single.”
Are open-toe stockings just as effective as closed-toe styles?
Yes. The medical compression comes from the graduated knit, not the toe box, so choose open or closed toe purely for comfort, footwear, or climate preferences unless your doctor says otherwise.
How do I know what size compression stocking to buy?
Visit our How to Measure page for step-by-step instructions. You’ll need your ankle, calf, and possibly thigh measurements, depending on the style. Still unsure? Contact us and we’ll help.
How do I choose the right length and style for my needs?
Knee-highs are ideal for symptoms limited to the lower leg. Pick thigh-highs or maternity pantyhose if swelling or varicosities extend above the knee, or if your doctor specifies full-leg coverage.
Why are accurate measurements so important for a good fit?
Correct sizing ensures the prescribed mmHg reaches the targeted veins. Too large means an ineffective therapy, while too small causes discomfort and is harder to don.
Does my doctor have to take my measurements, and when is the best time of day to do it?
Anyone can measure. Just make sure to do it first thing in the morning before swelling builds up. And be sure to follow the size chart exactly. If you’re not sure, ask us and we can walk you through it by phone or chat.
How many pairs should I buy at once for convenient rotation?
We suggest at least two pairs, one to wear, and one to wash. Rotating three or more pairs can double the life of each garment and ensures you’re never without support.
How should I wash and care for my compression stockings, and how often?
Hand- or machine-wash on gentle in lukewarm water with mild detergent after each wear, then air-dry away from heat. Avoid any fabric softeners and bleach to maintain elasticity.
My knee-high stockings dig into the back of my knee. Would a shorter length solve this?
First, slide a bit of fabric down so the top edge sits two finger-widths below the crease. If it’s still uncomfortable, switching to a petite or short length usually solves the helps.
Medical Use & Health Questions
Do I really need to wear compression stockings to improve my condition?
Consistent wear is key: gradient compression supports healthy circulation, reduces swelling, and can slow the progression of venous disease—skipping days often means symptoms quickly return.
What exactly are medical compression stockings?
They’re FDA-listed, knitted garments that apply controlled, graduated pressure from ankle to thigh to support venous return, reduce edema, and relieve leg fatigue.
What is compression therapy, and how does gradient compression work?
Compression therapy uses garments or wraps that are tightest at the ankle and gradually looser up the leg, pushing blood and lymph upward to combat pooling, swelling, and venous pressure.
Who benefits the most from wearing compression stockings?
Anyone who sits or stands for long periods, pregnant women, frequent travelers, athletes in recovery, and those with varicose veins, swelling, or a history of DVT all experience measurable relief.
What is a DVT, and why do stockings help after one?
A deep-vein thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep leg vein; wearing 20–30 mmHg knee-highs post-DVT helps manage swelling and lowers the risk of post-thrombotic syndrome.
Why are compression stockings prescribed after a blood clot?
They control residual swelling, improve venous return, and help prevent post-thrombotic complications, making them a standard post-DVT therapy.
How can compression stockings help during and after pregnancy?
Graduated compression counteracts pregnancy-related swelling and venous pressure, easing tired legs and reducing the risk of varicose veins and DVT.
Are there medical reasons why someone should avoid compression stockings altogether?
Severe peripheral arterial disease, uncontrolled heart failure, untreated septic phlebitis, or active skin infections can make compression unsafe. Always check with your physician.
Can I safely use lotions or creams with my compression stockings?
If the garment is latex-free (most modern lines are), feel free to moisturize—just let the lotion absorb fully before donning.
I currently wear 20-30 mmHg but will be traveling—should I switch to 15-20 mmHg?
Stick with your prescribed strength; healthy travelers start at 15–20 mmHg, but if you’re already in 20–30 mmHg you’ll get the best protection by staying at that level.
Should I wear compression only on the affected leg or on both legs?
Clinical guidance usually targets the symptomatic leg, but many customers prefer light support (like, 15–20 mmHg) on the healthy leg for balance and comfort. Follow your doctor’s advice and personal preference.
Why do I need compression stockings at all?
They’re a simple, drug-free way to relieve leg fatigue, control swelling, support healing, and prevent serious circulatory issues such as DVT. Think of them as daily therapy you can wear.
Will compression stockings relieve pain from varicose or spider veins?
Yes—graduated compression reduces venous pressure, easing the aching, throbbing, and heaviness that often accompany varicose or spider veins; many users report noticeable relief within the first week of consistent wear.
Orders, Shipping & Returns
Do I need a prescription to place an order?
No prescription is needed for ready-to-wear compression, but some insurance plans reimburse only with a doctor’s order, so it can be helpful to request one if you plan to file a claim.
Do you bill insurance companies directly, and will Medicare or my private plan reimburse me?
We do not submit claims, but we provide an itemized invoice you can submit for reimbursement; Medicare Part B generally excludes compression, while some private or FSA/HSA plans cover 20 mmHg or higher with a prescription.
Is my purchase eligible for FSA/HSA or other Flex benefits?
Most Flex and HSA plans allow compression garments 20 mmHg or higher with a doctor’s note; keep your receipt and prescription to file for reimbursement.
Do you take custom orders?
We don’t knit customs in-house, but our fit specialists can guide you to partner manufacturers that produce made-to-measure garments if your measurements fall outside standard sizes.
Part of my order is missing; when will the rest arrive?
Some sizes ship from different warehouses—check the tracking link in your confirmation email; back-ordered items ship the moment stock arrives, and our support team can give you an exact ETA.
Why hasn’t my order arrived yet?
Weather delays, carrier backlogs, or split-shipment logistics are rare but possible—track your package via the link in your confirmation, and our customer-care team will intervene with the carrier if delivery stalls.
Why doesn’t my discount code work on MSRP-priced items?
Certain brands enforce strict Minimum Advertised Pricing (MAP) policies, so discounts can’t be applied below MSRP. Whenever possible, we can suggest an equivalent style eligible for savings.
Compression Science & Product Education
What does “mmHg” mean in compression levels?
mmHg—millimeters of mercury—measures pressure; the number range (e.g., 20–30 mmHg) specifies how much graduated squeeze the stocking delivers, with the higher figure at the ankle tapering upward.
How do I pick the correct product and compression level?
Match compression strength (mmHg) to your doctor’s recommendation, or consider 15–20 mmHg for travel and mild fatigue, 20–30 mmHg for moderate varicose veins or post-surgery, and 30–40 mmHg only with medical guidance.
Does a run or snag in the fabric reduce a stocking’s compression?
A small run above the ankle won’t affect therapeutic pressure at the ankle, but a long or laddered run in the lower leg can reduce efficacy; replace any garment with significant damage.
Why are stockings difficult to put on, and how can I make it easier?
The ankle is the tightest point by design; using rubber grip gloves, a silky donning sleeve, or a metal “stocking donner” can cut donning time in half.
Can I layer one compression stocking over another instead of switching to a stronger level?
Double layering can achieve a higher combined mmHg, but it’s bulkier and harder to don. We recommend consulting your doctor first and, if higher pressure is truly needed, picking a single stocking in the prescribed strength.
When should I put my stockings on each day?
Put them on first thing in the morning before swelling starts, ideally while still in bed or sitting on the edge.
How long should I wear my stockings each day?
Put them on when you wake up and wear them while upright, usually 12-16 hours, then remove before bed unless your doctor instructs continuous wear.
What is lymphedema?
Lymphedema is chronic limb swelling caused by impaired lymphatic drainage. Medical-grade compression helps move lymph fluid, reduces discomfort, and is a cornerstone of long-term management.
Why do quality compression stockings cost more than regular hosiery?
Medical stockings use premium yarns, specialized circular knitting machines, and rigorous pressure testing to meet FDA and European standards—investing in durability and therapeutic accuracy.
Are Ames Walker or Mediven products manufactured in the USA?
All Ames Walker®-brand styles and Lounge Doctor® leg rests are proudly made in North Carolina, while Mediven® manufactures in state-of-the-art facilities in both the United States and Germany—so whichever brand you choose, you’re getting world-class craftsmanship and FDA-listed quality.
I’m allergic to latex—can I still use compression stockings safely?
Yes, you can. Just look for “latex-free” in the product details (all Ames Walker®, most Mediven® lines). They use synthetic spandex instead of natural rubber.
